The many uses of Jet Skis

Jet Ski is the term commonly used to refer to a type of personal watercraft that the rider sits on, rather than inside as they would if it were a boat. Although it is the common term ‘Jet Ski’ is actually a registered trademark of Kawasaki. Most Jet Skis have room for up to three people, though some four person models exist.

Jet Skis can be used for a number of different purposes. First and foremost, they are used as a recreational vehicle by many, who simply enjoy riding the waves at a high speed, in a more extreme fashion than they would experience if they were riding in a speedboat. This is because by being on top of the vehicle rather than inside it, the rider will experience greater turbulence during the ride, and therefore gain more of a thrill from it. They can also be used by surfers who wish to get to the speed of the waves. Known as tow-in surfing, this requires the surfer to be towed into a breaking wave by their partner, and has big advantages over hand paddling, as it allows them to catch up to waves that would be too fast otherwise. Jet Skis can also be used to tow people who are water skiing.

As well as recreational use, Jet Skis are also highly useful for other purposes due to their capabilities of being a light vehicle that can travel at high speed on the water. They are also easy to handle and affordable, so they are a useful transport vehicle for people who live in locations where water is abundant. Because they lack the external propellers that are commonplace on motorboats, they are also safer for swimmers and any nearby wildlife. These combined benefits make Jet Skis the preferred non recreational mode of transport over small motorboats. They will often be used by lifeguards and equipped with rescue platforms to allow swimmers who get into difficulty to be safely taken back to shore. Police and local authorities will also make use of Jet Skis, due to their high speed capabilities, in order to enforce laws on lakes and rivers.

Jet Skis are not completely safe vehicles to ride, however. Because of their high speed and quick responsiveness, it is not too difficult for an inexperienced rider to capsize the vehicle by turning at a rapid speed. There is also the possibility of collision with other vehicles using the waterway, as well as swimmers and natural obstacles such as rocks. Jet Skis also have the unique danger of orifice injuries. These occur as a result of the close proximity of riders to the Jet Ski’s pump jet. If a rider falls off the Jet Ski, they can land directly in the path of the high pressure pump jet. This jet will easily penetrate any orifice it reaches, which can cause severe injury or even death.
